April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month
APRIL 19, 2019 CLEARWATER, FL – In recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, The General Federation Women’s Club (GFWC) North Pinellas Woman’s Club (NPWC) volunteers were out in full force spreading awareness about child abuse prevention at the 5th annual Spring Fling 5k at Wall Springs Park in Palm Harbor, Saturday, April 13, benefiting Elisa’s Greatest Wishes charitable organization.
The fundraiser race honors the memory and wishes of 10-year old Elisa Nelson, who was riding her bike to Palm Harbor Middle School when she was kidnapped and murdered. Elisa’s Greatest Wishes supports numerous causes including the purchase of books for school libraries, funding scholarships and projects for Girl Scouts, youth athletics, and children with medical needs. In just five years, over $500,000 has been raised for charities in Elisa’s name.
Blue-shirted GFWC North Pinellas Woman’s Club volunteers lined the race starting gate with blue and silver “Pinwheels of Prevention” and gave away bracelets and coloring sheets to help raise awareness about how to prevent child abuse and neglect. In honor of one of Elisa’s greatest joys, reading, children were delighted to select their own free book from hundreds of popular titles. In addition, index fingers were painted blue in a vivid statement to abolish child abuse and enhance the well-being of all children in our Pinellas County community.
