Local Woman’s Club Promotes Reading at Sheriffs Youth Ranch and
King’s Highway Elementary Magnet School
March 2 is Read Across America Day
MARCH 1, 2019 – Clearwater, Florida Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books.
Here in Pinellas County, volunteers from the GFWC (General Federation of Women’s Club) North Pinellas Woman’s Club celebrated with children at the Sheriffs Youth Ranch in Safety Harbor and King’s Highway Elementary Magnet School in Clearwater. Volunteers entertained children from the Florida Youth’s Ranch by reading “The Cat in the Hat”, making “Cat in the Hat” masks and tossing bean bags in the “Cat in the Hat” hat. At the end of the party, each child selected their favorite Dr. Seuss book to keep and read.
At King’s Highway Elementary Magnet School, GFWC North Pinellas Woman’s Club volunteers donned their whimsical red and white-striped “Cat in the Hat” hats and read Dr. Seuss classics to dozens of delighted pre-k and kindergarten students.
Promoting literacy can be traced back to GFWC’s roots. In the 1960s, the American Library Association confirmed that 85 percent of all public libraries in the country had been founded by GFWC clubs. Read Across America is an opportunity for the GFWC North Pinellas Woman’s Club to continue the legacy of sharing books and the love of reading with our community.
